How Accurate Are the Sephora and Ulta Shade Finders?
Published 27 October 2026 · Foundation Shades
There is no published answer to how accurate the Sephora shade finder is, and the same goes for Ulta’s. Neither retailer’s shade finder page gives an accuracy figure. Treat either result as a strong first guess to test on your skin, because even one brand’s shade codes vary between formulas.
How Sephora’s shade finder works
Sephora’s online finder, called Find My Shade, starts from a foundation you already wear. You click the Find My Shade button on a foundation’s product page. Then you choose the brand, formula and shade you use now, and it gives you a match in the new foundation.
Sephora also has Color iQ, which it describes as a complexion matching tool relaunched with AI. Sephora says Color iQ looks at saturation as well as depth and undertone, and draws on a dataset of more than 10,000 skin tones.
How Ulta’s shade finder works
Ulta’s online finder, the Shade-to-Shade Finder, works the same way. On any foundation, concealer, BB cream, CC cream or tinted moisturiser page, you click Find your shade. You pick the brand, formula and shade you wear, and it shows your match.
Ulta lists three other routes:
- A foundation quiz that asks what you want from a foundation.
- Virtual Shade Match in the Ulta Beauty app, which matches you from your skin tone and undertone.
- Free shade matching in Ulta Beauty stores.
Is Sephora or Ulta better at shade matching?
We can’t say. We haven’t tested them, and neither retailer publishes a test. Both online finders do the same job, turning a shade you wear into a shade in another brand.
The differences are in scope. Ulta’s finder sits on concealer, BB, CC and tinted moisturiser pages as well as foundation. Sephora’s Color iQ adds saturation to depth and undertone. Neither difference tells you which match is closer.
Why any online match needs testing
Our own finder compares measured shade colours, so we have measured how rough those colours can be. We took every case where one brand uses the same shade code in two formulas, 4,780 pairs from 2021 retailer swatches. Their colours differ by a median of 7.0. Only 27% of the pairs are under 4.5, the line below which we call a match likely close.
So even “same shade, same brand” is often not the same colour. MAC NC25, for example, differs by up to 12.4 across five MAC formulas in our data. That limits how precise any colour-based match can be, ours included.
That is why our shade finder shows a closeness band and which way each match leans, not a single answer. Our comparison of shade finders sets out how the main tools differ.
How to check the shade a finder gives you
Take the suggested shade and the shades either side of it. Swatch all three on your jaw and look in daylight, then again after an hour. Keep the one that disappears.
